About Torquay United: Torquay United FC were formed on May Day 1899. They initially played fixtures on Teignmouth Road, using the fields of a Mr. John Wright, but were restricted to away fixtures in April because the fields were needed for grazing! The nearby Clarence Hotel was used as changing rooms (although there was a hut on the fields for those who didn’t mind roughing it). With cricket taking precedence for most potential opponents, it is widely thought that a friendly game against co-tenants Upton Cricket Club was Torquay United’s first ever fixture. This took place on 16th September. A Pitts hat-trick, together with singles from Upham and Wicks, saw Torquay cruise to a 5-0 victory.

Torquay United enjoyed several wins in their first season, including some by cricket scores (11-1 v Torquay Nomads, 9-0 v Torbay College Past & Present), but their opponents were often youth teams or hastily scrabbled together teams.

Torquay applied for the East Devon League ahead of the 1900/01 season and were accepted. They were now attracting hundreds of supporters and moved to the Recreation Ground in Torquay, only to be ousted by the more financially stable TICS rugby club. Despite the offer of two fields by John Wright, Torquay had to pull out of league football and sit back in envy as Ellacombe and Babbacombe vied for the title in the new Torquay & District League.

Torquay relocated to Cricketfield Road, playing friendlies, until they eventually rejoined the East Devon League – only for the league itself to fold, in 1907. At the time, Torquay’s reserve side was in the Torquay & District League, so the firsts took their place despite the embarassment of sharing a division with the reserves of Ellacombe and Babbacombe.
