With comfortable home wins, Kingsteignton Athletic and Buckfastleigh Rangers continue to set the pace at the top of the Torbay Clearance Services South Devon Football League Premier Division.

Kingsteignton prepared for Saturday’s crunch home tie with Watts Blake Bearne, who didn’t play last weekend, by completing the double over Newton Abbot ’66. Tom Reeves bagged a brace for the Rams and Ashley Dove came off the bench to score in a 3-0 victory.

Rangers enjoyed an even more emphatic win, scoring five without reply against East Allington United. Steve Sutton added another two goals to his tally with Kian Berry, Lewis Cox and Charlie Morgan also on target.

Brixham AFC Reserves survived an onslaught by their hosts to beat Ivybridge Town Reserves 1-0. The Ivies now switch focus to the Devon Premier Cup and will welcome Newtown from the Devon Football League on Saturday. The Ivies are the SDFL’s sole representatives in the last 16 despite not yet kicking a ball in the competition.

Waldon Athletic climbed into the top six with a 4-0 home win over Chudleigh Athletic, while Thomas Swabey of Elburton Villa Reserves scored the only goal of the game at Coach Road to send Paignton Saints Reserves to another narrow defeat.

There’s now a three way tie for top spot in Division One, with Beesands Rovers leading the way on goal difference. They gave that stat a boost on Saturday with a 6-1 home triumph over Barton Athletic. Louis Brace once again doubled up and was joined on the score-sheet by David Harvey, Lee Morgan, Bradley Williams and Ash Yeoman; Thomas Smith put away Barton’s consolation.

Mitchell Medlen salvaged a point for Plympton Athletic with a second half equaliser against visiting Upton Athletic. Kirean Nixon and Alex Stevenson had given Upton the advantage going into the break, Josh Walker with a first half goal for the hosts.

Morley Rangers’ unbeaten start to the season ended at Paignton Villa. Liam Jones, Tom Mayer and Charlie Thomas found the back of the bet for Villa with Dalton Brammer’s fourth goal of the season not enough for the Plymouth side.

Torquay Town got back to winning ways with a resounding 5-0 home win over Harbertonford, and there were goals galore at Lewthorne Cross where Ilsington Villa beat Babbacombe Corinthians 7-3, Dan Langford and Matt Warman both celebrating hat-tricks.

The headline game in Division Two saw Watcombe Wanderers take over at the top following a 4-2 victory over former leaders Newton Abbot Spurs Thirds. Jamie Carter, Eliott McIntosh, Sam Pyne and Laurence Macleod each netted for the Greens with Aiden Blackie and Deven Webb on target for Spurs. Watcombe, who go to Seaton Town in the Devon Senior Cup this weekend, have now won five out of five in the league. Spurs host Teignmouth Reserves in the same competition.

Adam Townsend scored twice as Waldon Athletic Reserves won 4-1 at Newton Abbot ’66 to go top of Division Three, leapfrogging their opponents in the process. The biggest win in the league was at Chudleigh Athletic Reserves where Bovey Tracey Reserves cruised to an 11-0 win, Alistair Chuchuk with a hat-trick.

South Brent Reserves remain two points clear at the top of Division Four following a 3-2 home win over Paignton Villa Thirds. Waldon Athletic Thirds kept up the pressure with victory in a 7-4 win at Newton Rovers Reserves, Steven Burridge with a hat-trick for the Clarets.

Last season’s Herald Cup semi-finalists Ilsington Villa cruised past near neighbours Liverton United in last week’s first round tie, Matt Warman with two goals in a 5-0 win at Halford.

Dan Langford put away his seventh goal of the season while Jack Langford and Robert Young also contributed goals. Villa have been drawn at home to Division One leaders Morley Rangers.

In the only other first round tie, Bovey Tracey Reserves once again knocked out higher division opponents to set up a home tie against Plympton Athletic. Level at full-time, the Division Three outfit struck twice in extra-time to send Division One opponents Harbertonford out. Ben Goble, James Lockwood and Nathan Trott scored for the Moorlanders with Callum Payne on target for the Fords.

Kingsteignton took over at the top of the Torbay Clearance Services SDFL Premier Division with a convincing victory away at Elburton Reserves on Saturday. The game started positively for the hosts with Samuel Lang converting following some impressive build-up play by Lewis Guest. But the Rams responded instantly and ran out 5-1 winners. There were braces for both Sam Barnes and Ryan Tovagliari while Tom Reeves also found the net for the visitors.

Former leaders Watts Blake Bearne slipped to their first loss of the season, beaten 2-1 at home by Waldon. Cam Gill bagged his seventh goal of the season for WBB, putting him top of the divisional goal scoring charts, but strikes from Lewis Eaton and Oliver Mason saw the Clarets claim the points.

Buckfastleigh secured their fourth win in a row away at Chudleigh, Tom Moody and Steve Sutton with doubles apiece and Kian Berry also on target. Nik Garrett scored Chudleigh’s consolation.

Brixham Reserves completed the double against Paignton Saints Reserves who are still looking for their first points. Ivybridge Reserves saw off a tough challenge from visiting Newton ’66 to extend their unbeaten run to three. Mike Vanstone and Harrison Hardy scored in a 2-0 triumph for the Ivies.

There was good news for Babbacombe Corinthians in the Devon Senior Cup. After holding hosts Cranbrook to a 1-1 draw, Corries made it through to the third round with a 4-3 penalty shoot-out win.

The top versus bottom clash in Division One went to form with Morley Rangers scoring four without reply against Barton. Dalton Brammer scored twice for the second week on the bounce with Lewis Jenkins and Corbin Mackin also netting.

Carlo Marino doubled up for unbeaten Plympton as they returned from Buckfastleigh Reserves with the points. Callum Thomas and Rob White also scored in the 4-1 victory.

Beesands are also yet to lose a game as they enjoyed a 5-1 home win over Upton. The aptly named Louis Brace scored twice, as did Ash Yeoman, with Lee Morgan also making the Bees’ score-sheet. Sam O’Mara notched for the visitors.

There were two goals apiece for Tom Mayer and Nigel Vass as Paignton Villa sent Torquay Town to their first defeat of the season, 4-1 the final score from South Devon Sports Centre.

Frank Ornyik and Troy Riley struck for Newton Spurs Thirds as they won 2-0 against SGT Police Reserves to stay top of Division Two. Watcombe are just a point behind after Dartmouth Reserves were unable to raise a side. The Greens have yet to drop a point.

Newton ’66 Reserves are still going strong at the top of Division Three following an emphatic 6-2 home victory over Paignton Saints Thirds, Tom Lowe with a hat-trick.

South Brent are the only unbeaten side left in Division Four. They lead the division courtesy of a 3-2 win at Waldon Thirds.

Berrow Rescues Win for WBB

In the Torbay Clearance Services SDFL Premier Division, a last gasp Ben Berrow header rescued Watts Blake Bearne’s 100 percent record as Chudleigh Athletic came back from three down at Abbrook Park to almost earn a point. Goals from Berrow, Cam Gill and Billy Clinch had WBB seemingly cruising to a fourth straight league win until strikes from Gavin Lake, Joseph Long and Jack Wills brought Athletic level.

Sam Barnes put away a hat-trick for Kingsteignton Athletic as the unbeaten Rams ran out 5-1 winners against visiting Paignton Saints Reserves. Matt Beer and Ollie Kewell also found the net for the hosts with Tom Hanley scoring Saints’ consolation.

In a repeat of the George Belli Cup final, Newton Abbot ’66 took on East Allington United at Osborne Park. Keran Fletcher scored twice for the Sixes, Rhys Morey also on target, but two goals from Fin Bullen and a Josef Sita goal ensured the Pirates left with a point.

Buckfastleigh Rangers’ Devon Premier Cup campaign came to a crunching end at SGT Police as an in-form Sean Finch scored four times and the home side ran out 7-0 winners. Saul Vanes contributed two goals to the cause with Rhys Morrallee also netting.

There was also disappointment for Elburton Villa Reserves as they crashed out 3-1 away to a very good Boca Seniors side, Billy Tedder-Hart with Villa’s effort.

Which all means that the SDFL’s sole representatives in the last 16 will be Ivybridge Town Reserves. The Ivies have yet to play a game due to a first round bye and an away walkover against Chittlehampton last weekend.

SDFL teams fared much better in the Devon Senior Cup, with no fewer than ten making it through to the third round. The most emphatic win went to Beesands Rovers who knocked ten past hosts Sidmouth Town Thirds without reply. Adam Winkworth celebrated a hat-trick for the Bees with Jack Eades and Ash Yeoman both scoring doubles. Goals from Alfie Prowse, Louis Brace and Kieran Stallard wrapped up a fine afternoon for the South Hams outfit.

East Allington United Reserves pulled off a surprise home win in one of three all-SDFL clashes, beating Torquay Town 2-1 with Jake Langman and Zak Jones scoring their goals. Plympton Athletic’s fine start to the season started as they won 5-0 at home to Brixham Town. Paignton Villa also enjoyed a 5-0 victory, Alfie Lloyds with a couple of goals at Upton Athletic.

Goals from Jack Dixon and Dan Langford helped Ilsington Villa to a 2-1 home win over Central FC, while Dalton Brammer’s brace aided Morley Rangers in their 3-1 home win over Ilfracombe Town Reserves.

Watcombe Wanderers are into the hat following their 5-1 win at Dawlish United Reserves, as are Newton Abbot Spurs Thirds who beat Hatherleigh Town 5-3.

Out of the competition go Dartmouth AFC Reserves, beaten 11-0 at Seaton, SGT Police Reserves, who lost out 5-1 at Beer Albion Reserves and WBB Reserves who were unable to fulfil the fixture away at Appledore Reserves.

Harbertonford and Totnes, Dartington and Meadowbrook progress due to their opponents pulling out: Sandymere Blues and Woolsery respectively.

The only Division One game saw Buckfastleigh Rangers cruise to an 8-0 triumph over Barton Athletic, Samuel Cook and Declan Cowley with a hat-trick apiece.

This weekend, Ilsington travel to near neighbours Liverton United in one of two Herald Cup first round ties, while Bovey Tracey Reserves welcome Harbertonford.

WBB and Buckfastleigh Enjoy Big Away Wins

EVENTFUL: There was plenty of action at South Devon Sports Centre as Plympton Athletic enjoyed a 6-3 victory against Paignton Villa. ©Al Macphee/MiraclePR

Averaging five goals a game and yet to concede a goal, Watts Blake Bearne have made a fantastic start to the season in the Torbay Clearance Services SDFL Premier Division.

Paignton Saints Reserves were the latest team to take on Bradley Killerby’s side, but home advantage was not enough to prevent WBB from taking the three points. Nathan Harvey scored twice for the Claymen in a 6-0 victory, and he was joined on the score-sheet by Cam Gill, Billy Clinch, Ben Drinkwater and Benjamin Lewis Berrow.

Last season’s champions Buckfastleigh Rangers have already tasted defeat against the leaders but have been in winning form ever since. They racked up their third away win on the bounce, beating Brixham AFC Reserves 5-1 at Wall Park. Kian Berry added another two goals to his tally with Rangers’ other goals coming from Luke Brown, Tom Moody and Steve Sutton.

Kingsteignton Athletic dropped their first points of the season, drawing 2-2 away at Chudleigh Athletic, the team they beat in both the Dartmouth and Devon Senior Cup finals. Joseph Long and Christian Williams found the back of the net for the hosts, with Mark Voisey and Ashley Dove responding for the Rams.

Scott Allen, Lewis Guest and Harry Addis celebrated goals as Elburton Villa Reserves scored their first win of the season by beating Newton Abbot ’66 3-0 at Haye Road. Ivybridge Town Reserves also tasted victory for the first time. They made up for their earlier loss at Windmill Hill by beating Waldon Athletic 5-2 at Erme Park. Joe Truelove scored a brace for the Ivies with Daniel Ahearn, Sam Marker and Henry Tank also netting.

In Division One, league newcomers Morley Rangers are still unbeaten at the top following a 3-3 draw at Upton Athletic. Corbin Mackin scored his fourth goal in as many games with Dean Badger and Dalton Brammer also on target. Alex Stevenson scored two of Upton’s goals, sub Rui de Garces with the other. Torquay Town were unable to capitalise on the dropped points as they were held to a goalless draw at Babbacombe Corinthians. Town are yet to concede a goal though.

An eventful game at South Devon Sports Centre saw Plympton Athletic end Paignton Villa’s unbeaten start to the campaign while extending their own. In a half of few chances, Plympton drew first blood on ten minutes, Grant Craven bursting through on the left and rifling home. Seven minutes from half time, Plympton ‘keeper Percy Daniel was unable to hold on to a Villa free-kick, enabling Jake Price to fire home the rebound. The sides were level for just two minutes though, Craven putting the visitors back in front when he took the ball past a stranded Jo Moroney and guided it into the empty net.

Plympton just about deserved their half time advantage, but Villa responded positively, piling on the pressure from the restart and earning a 52nd minute equaliser, Sam Woodcock heading home a corner. After good chances at both ends, Plympton’s Callum Thomas was sin binned. With a man advantage, Villa struck again just after the hour mark, Tom Mayer scoring from close range. Plympton responded instantly, Moroney parrying a Jack Clarke cross into the path of Carlo Marino who made no mistake. Seven minutes later, Jay Jones latched on to a hopeful long ball from Tyler Pickering before scoring a wonderful solo goal for 4-3. The game was interrupted by a couple of minutes of ill discipline, which saw Haydn Cook sent off for Villa and several yellow cards dished out. Following the restart, Villa were denied a late equaliser when Daniel superbly saved a free-kick. Plympton then put the game to bed in stoppage time with two goals from their young substitutes, giving them a slightly flattering 6-3 victory.

Elsewhere, Jack Dixon scored twice for Ilsington Villa in a 4-1 home win over Harbertonford who ended the game with nine men. Dan Langford scored his sixth goal of the season and Matt Warman also notched for Villa, Dave Hatch with the Fords’ strike.

Ash Yeoman also claimed a double as Beesands Rovers won by the same scoreline at Buckfastleigh Rangers Reserves. Jamie Williams and Jamie Watts also celebrated goals for the Bees; Jay Barnard scored Rangers’ consolation.

In Division Two, Aiden Blackie’s hat-trick helped leaders Newton Abbot Spurs Third to an emphatic 9-1 triumph away at Dartmouth AFC Reserves. Totnes, Dartington and Meadowbrook were also in goal-scoring mood as they put away eight without reply at Paignton Villa Reserves.

In Division Three, Bovey Tracey Reserves won 3-1 at Barton Athletic Reserves to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season. Totnes, Dartington and Meadowbrook Reserves are also yet to drop a point. They lead Division Four after beating Paignton Villa Thirds 2-0.

New signing Beck Hannah opened his account for Watts Blake Bearne with two goals in a 6-0 victory at Chudleigh Athletic. Cam Gill also scored twice for the Claymen who sit at the top of the Torbay Clearance Services Premier Division on goal difference. Benjamin Lewis Berrow and Gavin Weeks completed the goal-scoring for WBB while new ‘keeper Callum Jack made it two clean sheets in his opening two games.

There were braces for both Matt Beer and Ollie Kewell at Broadpark as Kingsteignton Athletic scored six for the second time running, beating East Allington United 6-2. Mark Voisey and Sam Barnes also found the back of the net for the Rams with Finn Bullingham and Finlay Watson on target for the Pirates.

Brixham AFC Reserves are also on maximum points after a narrow 3-2 home win over a Paignton Saints Reserves side playing their first game of the campaign.

A Luke Brown penalty and Tom Moody goal at Osborne Park gave Buckfastleigh Rangers the half-time advantage against Newton Abbot ’66. Matt Maller scored his second goal of the season after the break as Rangers ran out 3-1 winners.

An entertaining derby at Erme Park saw visiting Elburton Villa Reserves race into an early lead against Ivybridge Town Reserves. Goals from Scott Allen and Billy Tedder-Hart in the first seven minutes gave Villa a strong advantage, but former Plympton striker Mike Vanstone struck twice for the Ivies to ensure a share of the spoils.

Waldon Athletic took the lead at Millbridge in the Devon Premier Cup but following a red card, the home side turned the tables on the Torquay side who eventually bowed out 5-2.

There was also disappointment in the Devon Senior Cup for Buckfastleigh Rangers Reserves who lost out 4-0 at home to Westexe Park Rangers.

AFC Morchard Bishop ended South Brent’s Intermediate Cup hopes with a 2-1 away win. Watcombe Wanderers Reserves progressed to the Second Round with a 3-2 home win over South Zeal United Reserves, Sean Brown with a double and Jack Lavercombe also netting.

Torquay Town stormed to their second league win of the season in Division One. Curtis Booth, Kye Graham, Danny Rushe and Jacob Snell each made the score-sheet in a 4-0 triumph over fellow Torquay side Barton Athletic.

Morley Rangers lead the division following their 1-0 win at Babbacombe Corinthians, Corbin Mackin with the goal. It was a different story at Lewthorne Cross, and Beesands Rovers will still be scratching their heads, wondering how they only came away with a point. Leading 5-0, a Bees win seemed nailed on but Villa battled back to secure a 6-6 draw. Villa’s Dan Langford and Beesands’ Ben Williams each claimed hat-tricks. Matthew Warman scored twice and Robert Young was also on target for Villa. Lee Morgan’s double and a single from Jamie Watts completed the score-sheet for Rovers.

Joe Windsor scored twice as Paignton Villa routed Upton Athletic 6-0 at South Devon Sports Centre. Richard Malone, Thomas Mayer, Graham Mercieca and Harry Atkinson also celebrated goals for unbeaten Villa. Harbertonford are yet to pick up a point following a narrow 2-1 home loss to Plympton Athletic. Grant Craven and Ryan Hollett scored for Athletic with Harbertonford benefitting from a Tyler Pickering own goal.

Torbay Clearance Services South Devon League To Kick Off Today

Kingsteignton Athletic make the short trip to Osborne Park for their Torbay Clearance Services Premier Division opener on Saturday, having already lifted the Charity Shield to add yet more silverware to the Broadpark trophy cabinet. Having held on to the majority of their quadruple-winning squad, while bringing in proven winners such as Dan Rankin and Matt and Ross Beer from Buckland Athletic, the Rams could be another formidable outfit this season.

Not far away, Watts Blake Bearne will be kicking off their campaign at home to last season’s league winners Buckfastleigh Rangers at Abbrook Park. WBB, who recently picked up the Devon FA grassroots grounds team award, are hungry for success on the pitch after flattering to deceive at the start of last season. Bradley Killerby has now taken the reins at Wattsies and has already strengthened the first team by bringing in the likes of Bradley Rooney, from Bovey Tracey Reserves, and goalkeeper Callum Jack from Newton Abbot ’66. Jake Moore will once more wear the captain’s armband while Cam Gill and Billy Clinch will be sure to give opposition defences something to think about again this season. In contrast, Rangers have lost some serious firepower with Ryan Lucassi stepping down and Joshua Zimmerman leaving the club. All three centre-backs from last season have also exited the club, but at least Colin Barnard can still call upon Rangers’ top scorer last season, Steve Sutton, as he looks to rebuild. Luke Brown, a former Tavistock player, and young attacking midfielder Kian Berry have joined the club.

Newly promoted Waldon Athletic, under new manager Paul Feasby, will host Ivybridge Town Reserves at Windmill Hill. The Ivies have brought in a trio of players from neighbours Plympton Athletic, Mike Vanstone, Dan Edwards and Chris Batey, as they aim to improve on last season’s bottom half placement. Goalkeepers Luke Fletcher and Allan Tercjak have also signed, replacing the outgoing Phillip Knight. Ryan McNaught and Alex and Richard Henniker have departed the club.

Last season’s surprise package, Elburton Villa Reserves name former Ivybridge Development attacker Matt Goodwin among their new signings. They host a Brixham AFC Reserves side reeling from the loss of several players from the squad that came so close to winning the title. The Fishermen have retained top goalscorer Mark ‘Chico’ Griffiths though, and goalkeeper Ryan Walton has impressed in pre-season as a forward. Lee Hazlewood has also brought in Dan Tucker, from Buckland Athletic, and Scott Walker.

East Allington United have strengthened their attacking line-up by bringing in Dylan Coates who has been impressive in preseason alongside Fin Bullen, who was the division’s leading goalscorer last season. The Pirates open their campaign by welcoming promoted Chudleigh Athletic to Poole Lane.

In Division One, the SDFL’s newest club, Plymouth-based Morley Rangers, play their first game at home to Beesands Rovers, Plymstock School Sports Centre the venue. Plympton Athletic have returned to the South Devon League and face a tough test against Division Two double winners Ilsington Villa. Elsewhere in Division One, Torquay sides Babbacombe Corinthians and Barton Athletic do battle at Windmill Hill; Upton Athletic host Paignton Villa at Armada Park and Torquay Town travel to Harbertonford.

Paget Pounces to Bring Herald Cup Glory to Kingsteignton, Rangers Claim Premier Title

CLOUD NINE: Kingsteignton celebrate winning their ninth Herald Cup after a late Paget strike ends Windmill’s bid to become first Plymouth side to lift it. © Al Macphee/MiraclePR

A late Aaron Paget strike won Kingsteignton Athletic their ninth Herald Cup, and their first for 20 years, while Buckfastleigh Rangers scored three away at Elburton Villa to clinch the Premier Division title.

The Herald Cup, sponsored by Torbay Clearance Services, pitted together two in-form teams at The Rec last Friday night. Kingsteignton had already secured the Division One title, while Premier Division outfit The Windmill had narrowly missed out on the Premier Division crown following a remarkable run of 12 straight league wins.

Lee France’s side were aiming to become the first Plymouth side to lift the Herald Cup but they made a nervous start to the game. In contrast, Kingsteignton went for the jugular from the start and soon found themselves with a chance to go in front after Tom Reeves was felled in the box. Up stepped Sam Barnes whose seventh minute penalty epitomised the confident start the Rams had made.

The Windmill began to settle into the game as the half wore on, and hauled themselves level with a penalty of their own, seven minutes from half-time. Goalkeeper Jay Osborn guessed the right way, but couldn’t prevent the goal as Windmill captain Mike Neal tucked the ball into the bottom left corner.

The second half was a much more entertaining affair with The Windmill ramping up the pressure and creating the majority of the chances. With eight minutes remaining, their cup hopes took a huge blow following a controversial incident on the touchline. Kingsteignton had played the ball forward only for Brennan Moore to catch the ball. Despite vigorous protests that the ball had gone out of play, the referee gave the free-kick to Kingsteignton and pulled out the yellow card. With Moore having already been booked in the first half, The Windmill found themselves a man down. Nevertheless, they continued to push for a winner, Ryan Walton’s low shot forcing Osborn into a save two minutes later.

With three minutes remaining, Walton attempted to play substitute Ben Woodman through. Kingsteignton intercepted the pass, broke away and put their sub Aaron Paget through on the right side of the box. With goalkeeper Dan Cork charging out towards him, Paget slid in and got his shot away. The ball crept in at the far post, and the Rams erupted in celebration.

As tempers frayed, Windmill lost first Neal, to the sin bin, and then Sam Doyle, to a straight red card, ending the game with eight men. Nevertheless, the team regrouped to sportingly applaud the winners at the end of the game.

Kingsteignton Manager Steve Workman admitted that he had gambled on a formation change at the end, putting three up front. “We were on the ropes round about the sending off and I thought if we couldn’t get hold of it, we were going to get caught at one stage or another. I thought, if we’re going to win it, let’s do it in 90 minutes. And that’s basically what we did.”

“We’ve had an amazing season, winning the league with a game to play,” said Kingsteignton captain Jason Jones. “These boys are a fantastic group of lads who work hard for each other. I couldn’t be prouder.” Kingsteignton will now play Chudleigh Athletic in each of their final three games, once in the league, once in Saturday’s Devon Senior Cup Final, and for a final time in the Dartmouth Cup final on 24th May at the Duckspond, home of Buckfastleigh Rangers.

Buckfastleigh travelled to Haye Road, Elburton on Saturday, knowing that only a win would be good enough for them to take the Torbay Clearance Services Premier Division title away from league leaders Brixham AFC Reserves. Despite early pressure from Elburton Villa Reserves, Ryan Lucassi opened the scoring for Rangers. Scott Allen then hit the bar for Villa, before Sam Lang gave Brixham hope with an equaliser before the break. But further goals from Josh Zimmerman and Luke Brown in the second half finally saw Rangers over the line.

The consolation for both Brixham and The Windmill is that their promotion to the Devon Football League has now been confirmed.

At Coach Road, also on Saturday, Ivybridge Town Development put on an impressive display as they recovered from a nightmare start to cruise to a 7-2 Devon Intermediate Cup victory, ending a seven year SDFL county cup drought.

A Sam Haggar header and an own goal saw Exeter side St Thomas Social Club two up after seven minutes. But the unfazed young Ivybridge outfit pulled one back on 29 minutes when Matt Goodwin beat the offside trap to slot home. Kai Foster scored a superb equaliser three minutes before the break, and Ivybridge took full control of the second half, Harley Battle, Craig Brenton (2), Ben Endean and Jamie Rose wrapping up a well-deserved win.

Earlier in the week, Bovey Tracey Reserves also enjoyed an emphatic cup win, beating Brixham Town Reserves 5-0 at Ipplepen’s Moor Road to lift the Les Bishop Cup. Captain Alistair Chuchuk broke the deadlock in the first half, rifling the ball into the bottom left, but both sides hit the woodwork before the break. The Moorlanders doubled their lead a minute after the restart, Ben Moyle doing well to find the net from just outside the box despite being off balance. Liam Halliday had a chance to narrow the deficit just after the hour mark, but his penalty was high and wide. Soon after, Jamie Farrer got in behind for Bovey and guided a superb lob over the onrushing Town goalkeeper. Ali Chuchuk wrapped up the win with a fourth on 76 minutes, and Brixham were denied even a consolation when a last minute effort was tipped over the bar by the Bovey goalkeeper. The fifth came in stoppage time, Brad Rooney’s out-swinging cross-cum-shot finding its way into the roof of the net.

The final divisional title will be decided at Abbrook Park on Friday evening, with Watts Blake Bearne Reserves hosting Brixham Town in a ‘winner takes all’ clash. Two goals apiece from Nathan Williams and James Moxon earned WBB the three points they needed at home to Totnes and Dartington on Monday night. Victory on Friday will win them the Division Three title. Any other result will see Brixham Town celebrate a league and cup double.

Brixham Go Top, But Title is Still Rangers’ to Lose

IVY LEAGUE: A talented young Ivybridge Development side lift the Fred Hewings Cup after a 5-1 win over Paignton Villa Reserves. © Derek Castree

The winners of the Herald Cup and Premier Division, both sponsored by Torbay Clearance Services, will be decided this weekend, with Kingsteignton Athletic taking on The Windmill in Friday evening’s cup final at The Rec (7pm KO), and Buckfastleigh Rangers looking to pip Brixham AFC Reserves to the league title on Saturday with a win at Elburton Villa Reserves.

The Windmill’s outside chance of holding on to top spot evaporated early last Saturday when it became clear that Salcombe Town were not going to be able to fulfil their fixture at Buckfastleigh. But it was Brixham who would end the afternoon in pole position following their 2-0 win at Ivybridge Town Reserves.

Lewis Perring scored twice for Watts Blake Bearne who defeated Newton Abbot ’66 3-1. Benjamin Berrow also scored for WBB with Lee Grimshaw responding for the Sixes who will finish seventh.

Ivybridge Town Development put on a top class performance at Totnes and Dartington F.C. last Friday night to beat Paignton Villa Reserves 5-1 and lift the Fred Hewings Cup, sponsored by Combined Roofing Contractors.

The Ivies drew first blood following a corner. Despite a valiant effort from Villa goalkeeper Adam Taylor to get the ball away, Gary Dickson found the net with a header. Taylor also got his hands to Ivybridge’s second goal after Matt Goodwin raced clear of the defence on the right and got a shot away. But Goodwin’s effort was too powerful and found the bottom left. Max Parnowski pulled off a superb save from Jay Horn at the other end, but the gap widened shortly afterwards when Lewis Dickson ran through the centre of the defence to latch on to a great pass before slotting coolly past Taylor.

If Villa had any hopes of a second half fight-back, they were cruelly put to bed a minute after the restart as Craig Brenton scored Ivybridge’s fourth. Following a decent spell, Tom Armstrong had the opportunity to pull one back for the Torbay side about five minutes later, but his shot from the edge of the box went just over the bar. As the match wore on, Villa continued to fight for a consolation, but it was Ivybridge who came closest to scoring, Taylor pulling off a fantastic save from a free-kick. With two minutes to go, Paignton Villa did find the back of the net, as Horn’s accurate free-kick beat the wall and nestled into the bottom right before Parnowski could move a muscle. Ivybridge responded immediately with a fifth goal, Brenton the goalscorer again.

“The big plan was for Martin Mitchell to take the lads all the way through from Under-10s at MAPs all the way to Under-16s, so all the credit has to go to Martin and Gary Dickson,” said Assistant Manager Andrew Moon

“To go from Under-16s straight into men’s football is a little bit daunting, but these guys have got into two cup finals this season, and we’ve narrowly lost out in another semi-final. I think we will end up finishing third in the league, so all-in-all a good season, I couldn’t ask for any more.

“I think it was done by half time, but we knew that if they scored, they were going to have a bit of a go. As I was walking off, I could hear their manager already trying to rally the troops.

We said to the boys, we don’t need to press the game. We can let them come on to us a little bit. We caught them a couple of times and put it to bed. But fair play to the guys, because they kept going and got that free-kick near the end.”

Ivybridge will now hope to go one better than Brixham Town last season and win the A&S Devon Intermediate Cup at Coach Road on May 14th. They take on St Thomas Social Club from Exeter, with kick-off at 2.30pm.

“We haven’t just been choosing our best team for these finals,” explained Moon. “We’ve got such a good squad that we’ve been mixing it around, so there are a couple of guys who will come in for the next one. It’s on the 3G, which will help us play football, so I will back us.”

Kingsteington Athletic will go into their Herald Cup final as Division One champions following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Paignton Saints at South Devon Sports Centre on Monday evening. Callum Leech scored twice for the Rams, who were four up by half-time, with Sam Barnes, Nathan Isaac and Jason Jones completing the quintet.

The win came hot on the heels of a 3-1 triumph over Saints in Saturday’s reverse fixture at Broadpark. Barnes again found the net in that game and was joined on the score-sheet by Ashley Dove and Ryan Tovagliari. Jake Powell responded for the visitors.

Having successfully appealed against a replay ruling, Ilsington Villa collected three points from their abandoned game against Torquay Town in February. This meant that Villa went into Saturday’s game at East Allington United with the title all but mathematically theirs. Dan Langford, who will finish the season as the league’s top goalscorer, added two more goals to finish just shy of a half century as Villa won 2-1, Fin Bullen responding for the Pirates. Torquay Town were held 3-3 at Barton Athletic Reserves, Simon Ross scoring twice and Simon Bracey also on target.

Division Three leaders Brixham Town won their last home game of the season 4-1 against Chudleigh Athletic Thirds. Paul Christie scored a brace, Stuart Pointon converted a penalty and Daniel Trezise found the net for Town, with Alfie Luscombe on target for Chudleigh. Brixham now prepare for a probable title decider away at Watts Blake Bearne Reserves on 20th May. WBB romped to a 7-1 triumph at Teign Village with James Moxon and Jakeb Heywood-Cann both scoring doubles. Ben Drinkwater, Matt Elmore and Nathan Williams also netted for the Claymen, while Mike Turner found a consolation for the Quarrymen.

A pearl of a goal from Fin Bullen proved enough to clinch East Allington United the George Belli Cup in Friday night’s competitive clash with Newton Abbot ’66 at Longcross, Dartmouth.

Good vision from Josef Sita set up the chance for Bullen who found space on the left before curling a shot into the top corner. That goal gave the Pirates the half time advantage, but they were rocked about an hour in when Justin Denning was shown a red card for a high challenge. Newton ’66 piled on the pressure, and fashioned some good chances, but Josh Pascoe almost made it 2-0 when his low drive was parried away. The Sixes won several corners and hit the crossbar in the dying stages, but East Allington stood firm to claim the prize.

“We’ve got a rich history in the cups,” said manager Luke Harvey. “For some reason, we always seem to find a way. Credit to the lads, because they’ve got a great spirit. Even when we went down to ten men, they didn’t stop fighting.

“It was a good, physical encounter. Both teams knew what was at stake. It was 90 minutes of hard work, and both sides were hungry for it. I thought Newton ’66 were organised, physical and strong, and they put us off our game for a little bit, but we managed to navigate our way through.”

Goalscorer Bullen was awarded the man of the match tankard by cup sponsor Manor Building Company, and Harvey agreed with the decision.

“His goal tally speaks for itself, and it has done for a couple of years now,” he said. “He’s a talisman for us. He’s still a young lad and is hungry for goals. He’s an absolute asset to the team and a great lad too. He deserves the man of the match award tonight.”

The Windmill kept their slim title hopes alive with a convincing 6-0 victory over Plymouth rivals Elburton Villa Reserves on Saturday, ending their opponents’ chances. Rhys Walton netted twice at Bull Point with Carlton Allen, Tommy Phillips, Andy Parker and Brennan Moore completing the scoring.

The Windmill end their league campaign with Tuesday evening’s must-win tie at Ivybridge Town Reserves. A victory at Erme Park would see Lee France’s men go into the weekend at the top of the Premier Division, hoping Saturday’s results go their way.

Brixham AFC Reserves will reclaim top spot with a win in their final game, also at Ivybridge, but Buckfastleigh Rangers, who are at home to Salcombe Town, still have the title in their hands. They will play their final game a week later, at Elburton.

Meadowbrook Athletic finished a tough season with a 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Watts Blake Bearne.

Kingsteignton Athletic are back on course for a quadruple trophy haul after they comfortably won their Dartmouth Cup semi-final replay 4-0 at Broadpark. Aaron Paget scored twice for the Rams, with Sam Barnes and Louis Dickinson also on target. Paignton Villa will hope for a better outcome on Friday night, when their reserves take on Ivybridge Town Development in the Fred Hewings Cup Final at Totnes and Dartington FC.

Kingsteignton were also in action on Wednesday night. Victory over Waldon Athletic would have ended the Clarets’ title hopes and set up an enticing title showdown with leaders Paignton Saints Reserves. The teams will play each other twice over three days.

Barton Athletic Reserves will be in a cup final after all. Their replayed Lidstone Cup semi-final ended with a 2-0 victory over East Allington United Reserves.

A win at Ipplepen Athletic Reserves on Tuesday night would have seen Ilsington Villa go back to the top of Division Two. Villa won 3-1 at Dartmouth AFC Reserves on Saturday, with George Harris, Matthew Warman and Stephen Hobbs on target. Braces from Jamie Chamberlain and Simon Ross helped keep Torquay Town in pole position, Ollie Corderoy also scoring as Town beat Paignton Villa Reserves 5-0 at Barton Cricket Club.

Division Four champions Waldon Athletic Reserves lost out for only the second time this season with a 6-4 reverse at Brixham Town Reserves. Liam Halliday and Alex McKerrell scored two apiece, with Stephen Rohan also doubling up, for ten-man Waldon.

There are still four teams battling for the Torbay Clearance Services SDFL title following a ‘super Saturday’ of big games.

League leaders Buckfastleigh Rangers faced a daunting trip to Bull Point to face in-form The Windmill who knew they needed a win to keep their faint title hopes alive. The Plymouth side earned the points they needed with Rhys Walton scoring twice in a 5-1 win. Ben Woodman, Michael Neal and Ashley Walker also found the back of the net for the Herald Cup finalists, with Steve Sutton getting Rangers’ goal.

Brixham AFC Reserves also had a tough fixture, travelling to East Allington United who had trounced therm 5-1 the previous week. But the Fishermen overcame the Pirates this time around, winning 4-3 to return to the top of the division. East Allington are next in action at Dartmouth AFC on Friday night, where they take on Newton Abbot ’66 in the final of the George Belli Cup (7pm KO).

Elburton Villa Reserves knew that anything but a win at home to Salcombe Town wouldn’t realistically be enough. They won 3-1 with goals from Lewis Guest, Corbin Mackin and Cody Jones, Ben Tapper on target for Salcombe. Villa’s next game is a mouth-watering crunch tie at fellow Plymouth side The Windmill on Saturday – a game neither team can afford to lose.

Ivybridge Town Reserves recorded another impressive home win, beating Watts Blake Bearne 2-1 at Erme Valley, Sam Stevens and Bailey Tingley with their goals.

Paignton Saints Reserves hauled themselves back to the top of Division One with a narrow 2-1 home victory over title rivals Chudleigh Athletic Reserves. Connor Stewart and Sam Winstanley were on target for Saints, wiith Joe Potter responding for Chudleigh.

In the division’s only other game, Harbertonford celebrated their first league win since October with a 6-1 thrashing of bottom side Kingskerswell and Chelston. Sam Passmore had his shooting boots on, scoring four of the Fords’ goals, David Hatch and Jordan Baggott also netting. Frank Major put away ‘Kerswell’s consolation goal.

Ilsington Villa have one hand on the Division Two trophy after winning 3-0 at title rivals Torquay Town. Jack Dixon, Matthew Warman and George Harris struck to condemn Town to their first league loss of the season.

Babbacombe Corinthians won their final home game of the season 7-2 against Barton Athletic Reserves, with Lee McArthur and Ben Nickells both putting away braces. Curtis Marshall, Joshua Easterbrook and Connor Charlesworth also scored for the hosts.

Newton Abbot Spurs Thirds beat SGT Police Reserves 4-2 in a Thursday night game at The Rec, while goals from Jamie McGuinness and Steeve Yava secured Watcombe Wanderers Reserves a 2-0 win at East Allington United Reserves in their final away game.

Brixham Town are still unbeaten at the top of Division Three after a comfortable 5-0 win over Broadhempston United, who end their season with just a point to their name. Harry Chastney doubled up for Town, Stuart Pointon scored from the spot, and Shane Pike and Jack Thomson also celebrated goals. Kingsbridge and Kellaton United battled out a 1-1 draw with Teign Village in their penultimate game, while Newton Abbot ’66 Reserves picked up an easy three points with Liverton United Reserves unable to raise a side.

Waldon Athletic Reserves became the first SDFL side to win their division following a 1-0 home win over Bovey Tracey Reserves. Terry Hunter scored the decisive second half goal that took the Clarets over the line.

In-form Paignton Villa Reserves edged a five-goal Fred Hewings Cup semi-final tie at home to Chudleigh Athletic Thirds. Ashley Beetschen, Charlie Thomas and Jack Wilkinson found the net for Villa with Christian Williams and Matthew Rushton scoring for Chudleigh.

Villa will face Ivybridge Town Development in the final after the Division Four outfit dispatched Division Three side Watts Blake Bearne Reserves 6-1 at Erme Valley. Matthew Goodwin scored a hat-trick for the Ivies, with Callum Collings, Craig Brenton and Lewis Dickson joining him on the score-sheet.

The Fred Hewings Cup final will take place on Friday 6th May at Totnes and Dartington FC.
