Buckland Ladies dominated this game from the very first whistle until the final one and I struggle to understand how they could have lost their opening league game so heavily. But if they play the way they did today, I can’t see them losing many more game this season.

The match referee Robin Connelly got the game underway and Buckland went straight into attacking mode and came close to taking an early first half lead. The ball was played into the Brislington box from the right hand side and close in by the post; Adele Rogers stabbed the ball just wide.

Buckland camped themselves in the Brislington half and one very good passing move played Abi Meyers into the box but she blasted her shot high and wide of the target. But Buckland soon took the lead when a great pass played in Sarah Stacey who coolly looked up and slotted the ball past Vicky Powell who was in goal for Brislington.

It was not a case of would Buckland score again, it was how many and they soon made it two goals to nil. The ball came into the near post from the right hand side and the Brislington ‘keeper made a bit of a hash of dealing with the ball and only managed to knock it towards the goal line. Bucks Sarah Stacey reacted the quickest and got to the ball a fraction before the defender could to poke it over the goal line.

Brislington were slack at the back and allowed Natalie Warman an easy passage into their box; Natalie got the ball under control and fired off a good shot that was well saved one-handed by the Brislington ‘keeper.

The referee blew up for half time and Buckland could have gone in winning by a higher margin.

The game restarted with a rare and meaningful attack by Brislington but it came to nothing and Buckland very soon regained full control of the match.

From a corner, Bucks Courtney Butt fired over the crossbar very close to the goal line. From another Buckland corner the ball was flicked up on to the crossbar and stayed in play but was eventually cleared.

Yet another Buckland corner and this time they made it count; the ball was fired towards the back post from the right hand side, headed back towards the middle of the goal and then headed home powerfully by Courtney Butt.

Despite all the strong tackling in the game, only one player went into the referee’s notebook; Bucks’ Jodie Chubb made a rather reckless challenge, but I thought the booking was a bit harsh given the spirit in which the game was played.

A big well done to the Buckland Ladies you were superb today and fully deserved your victory.

Buckland Hit Nine to Send Exeter Out of FA Cup

The first of many derbies for Buckland Athletic LFC this season saw Grant Fisher’s side host Exeter City LFC in the First Round Qualifying stage of the SSE FA Women’s Cup.

The last time the sides met was in last season’s SWH Devon Senior Cup with Buckland’s Hayley Chamberlain scoring the only goal to put Bucks through, Buckland going on to also knock out Plymouth Argyle en route to lifting the cup.

Exeter have since been relegated and Buckland promoted, with both sides now playing in the SWWFL Premier Division – along with Torquay United. Having also drawn Argyle at home in this season’s Senior Cup, Buckland are looking forward to some good crowds this season.

Around 100 turned out on Sunday afternoon for what many might have expected to be a close game. It turned out to be anything but as Buckland’s front line tore Exeter’s defence apart time and time again to rack up a 9-2 victory.

Exeter actually started the game brightly with two good chances in the first five minutes, the first fizzing wide of the right-hand post and the second missing the left-hand upright after Abbi Bond had rushed out to charge down a dangerous attack.

Two goals in three minutes for Buckland settled the nerves though. Laura Gough played the ball in from the right for strike partner Kirsty Caunter to tap in after five minutes. Then, a great move up the right-hand side, orchestrated by Jodie Chubb, ended in a corner on the left. The ball was worked back to captain Hayley Chamberlain who placed a superb strike high into the net out of the reach of Exeter Goalkeeper Shannon Watts. Buckland then turned up the pressure and threatened a third before Exeter broke away and won a corner at the other end.

The respite didn’t last long though. On 15 minutes, Gough burst past her marker on the right before cutting the ball back from the byline for Caunter again who doubled up. From the restart, Gough forced another smart save from Watts as the home side looked to press home their advantage.

Exeter had a chance to narrow the gap as they found space on the right on 23 minutes but there was no one in the box and the delivery went harmlessly out. Five minutes later, Gough’s acrobatic overhead kick was well-executed but just at the right height for Watts who gathered gratefully.

Exeter had a couple of decent chances before half-time, both of them falling to Dani Skinner who hit the first narrowly over and then missed her kick as a cross from the right saw her with a clear sight on goal.

It didn’t take Buckland long to extend their lead after the break, Caunter glancing a header past the goalkeeper from a right-hand cross for her hat-trick. Buckland then gave possession away which culminated in a lobbed goal for Exeter. Both sides traded chances but Buckland always looked the most likely to score again, Amber Coates forcing two saves before Gough slotted home her first of the afternoon.

Chamberlain left the field to a deserved cheer and her replacement Emily Hannaford was next on the score-sheet with a composed finish from the left-hand side of the box. As the Exeter rearguard capitulated, Gough smelled blood and swiftly completed her hat-trick, outpacing her marker for Buckland’s seventh and finishing off a superb ball in from Natalie Warman for number eight. Hannaford chested the ball against the bar before Exeter scored their second, a textbook direct free-kick into the right-hand corner. Substitute Abigail Meyer completed the rout, smashing home as she surged free on the right-hand side and Caunter almost made it double figures, placing the ball home after good work by Sarah Louise Stacey but the referee ruling the goal out.

With a bye in the next round, Buckland will go straight into the Third Qualifying Round. Their next game will be their league opener away at Bishops Lydeard on Sunday.

Bristol Bring Super League Talent to Homers Heath

Losing a football match is never a pleasant experience but when defeat comes against one of the top ten football clubs in the country, the learning experience is a huge consolation – not to mention the chance to share the pitch with some of the country’s brightest prospects.

Bristol City WFC kick off their Women’s Super League winter season campaign away at Chelsea LFC on the 24th September. Their squad will contain a number of England Youth players including goalkeeper Caitlin Leech; defenders Ellie Wilson and Jasmine Matthews, midfielders Flo Allen, Jodie Brett and Megan Alexander and striker Millie Farrow.

Defender Corinne Yorston has a handful of England senior caps to her name while seasoned international defender Frankie Brown and fellow Scot Chloe Arthur competed for Scotland in last month’s 6-0 defeat at the hands of England. Loren Dykes, another Vixens defender, has pulled on the Welsh shirt over 50 times while midfielders Hayley Ladd and Georgia Evans are also part of the current Welsh squad.

So it was a real treat for local football fans when Bristol City WFC brought a combined college/development squad down to Homers Heath last Sunday for their first pre-season game.

Buckland started positively but the first chance went the visitors’ way, Chloe Gilroy heading wide of Abbi Bond’s goal, Bond pulling on her gloves for the first time since being sidelined with a broken ankle.

Moments later, the Buckland defence received the first signs that they were in for a difficult afternoon when England Under-17 forward Lauren Hemp got behind the full-back and sent a dangerous low ball into the box, Gilroy again wide of the mark.

Buckland then fashioned their first real attempt when the industrious Laura Gough latched on to a Bristol back-header before rifling her shot past the near post. Buckland were on the back foot again soon after as Bristol attacked with intent, Gilroy and Holly Chandler both seeing shots blocked by the Yellows defence.

Buckland then had their best spell of the half. First, a superb ball from stand-in captain Hayley Chamberlain put Gough and Abigail Meyer through, the latter shooting wide. Soon after, Kirsty Caunter put Gough through once more only for her shot to miss the target again. In between those efforts, Bristol had a penalty appeal waved away after one of their players went down on the edge of the box.

With Bristol looking dangerous with every attack, it was no surprise when they scored the opener, Courtney Murphy’s low ball across the box converted by Hemp. To their credit, Buckland immediately responded, Natalie Warman sending in a cross from the left that Gough only just failed to connect with. But it was Bristol who found the net again soon after, tall centre-back Amy Goddard coming up for a corner and heading past Bond.

Grant Fisher introduced Helen Kukor up front, Caunter making way, and Kukor was immediately into the action, combining well with Chamberlain and Gough, but Bristol defending well. Warman also won a free-kick on the left-hand side as her attempted cross was cut out by a Bristol arm but the Bristol goalkeeper – who had been borrowed from Buckland for the day – gathered comfortably.

Even at two down, a Buckland goal before the break could have made things interesting but it was the team in red who notched next, Jess Wooley powering home a fine strike from the left-hand side of the box to send Bristol in three up. To make matters worse, the half ended with Kukor going down and picking up a hand injury as she attempted to drive up the left touchline.

Unable to get the goal at the end of the half, Buckland did the next best thing with an early strike after the break, Warman with a great goal to reduce the arrears. Any hope of a comeback was soon thwarted though as Goddard converted substitute Ellie Strippel’s free-kick for a fourth.

Following that goal, the game turned into the Lauren Hemp show. If the just-turned 17-year old had been dangerous in the first half then she was positively lethal after the break and could have scored more than the one she did put away. Turning her marker with ease, Hemp sent a warning effort from the edge of the box crashing against the bar.

Substitute Libby Goater was wide with Exeter’s next effort before Buckland managed to force a save with a low shot at the other end. Then the ball was with Hemp again, her shot from the left cannoning back off the post this time before ending up in Bond’s grateful arms. Gilroy headed over and Hemp hit the side netting before the fifth goal finally arrived, Hemp again involved as her shot was blocked by Bond’s leg before Holly Reed netted from the follow-up. Moments later, Hemp was popping up on the right, bursting past Potts who went down for some time with an ankle injury. When the game resumed, Hemp tried one final time to bag herself a second goal but her shot cleared the bar.

Looking beyond the scoreline, Buckland will have benefited greatly from their Bristol challenge and should feel ready to take on anyone the SWWFL can throw at them.

“I thought it was a great workout for us as our first pre-season game of the season against a good opposition,” said Bristol City WFC Development Coach James Thomas.

“Although we had a young squad we showed plenty of patience and composure in possession of the ball and the pace and incisiveness of our attacks were really pleasing to see.

“I’d also like to thank Buckland for their hospitality and the opportunity to bring a team down as part of our preparation for the coming season.”

Buckland Under-12s Eye Double After Dawlish Win

Our Under-12s took to the pitch on Sunday against Dawlish United in the Semi-Final of the League Cup.

The game was played in really good spirits and after a nervy start, Buckland took the lead when an unfortunate own goal ended up in the back of the net after some neat play.

We then added to the score-line just before half time when Taylor Ford let loose with a trademark left-footed thunderbolt which smashed into the top corner.

After half-time, Buckland made a few changes and Anya Nicette helped herself to an 11 minute hat-trick with Ocean Latto contesting with Ford for the goal of the game.

This now sees the girls into the League Cup Final as they look to complete a league and cup double.

Buckland Under-12s Seal Title in Debut Season

This day will go down forever as a history-making day as Buckland Under-12s followed in the footsteps of the ladies’ first team last season – being our first junior girls’ side and winning the league on their first attempt. Great credit must go to Joe and Dean for doing a fantastic job with the girls.

These girls, in their first ever season together, put on a great display to beat a very good Millwey Rise team 2-1. The game really was a keenly-fought battle with the top two sides battling away to win the game.

This game was a great credit to both teams with no doubt the conditions playing a huge part in the game. However, Buckland took the advantage when Cicely Downs powered forward and drove the ball into the top corner.

Millwey Rise responded quickly with a free-kick which sailed in, quickly returning the game to a level playing field. A game played with real fight and passion from both sides ended when some wonderful first-time passing resulted in Taylor Ford hitting the final blow with a fine finish and what proved to be the winning goal.

I must say a huge thank you to Dean and Joe who have coached the girls; the parents, who have been a tremendous support and outstanding all season, and, last but not least, the girls who have proven today the talent in our area. There are future players that can be developed and hopefully this is the start of the future of this football club.

Thank you to our sponsors GB Confectionary, MacWhirter Air Conditioning and Teign Housing for kitting the girls out and making them look highly professional: the future is bright the future is yellow.

Bucks Reach New Heights With Shock Argyle Cup Victory

There were jubilant scenes at Homers Heath yesterday afternoon as Buckland Athletic Ladies defied the odds to send Devon Women’s Senior Cup holders Plymouth Argyle LFC crashing out of the competition with a deserved 4-2 victory in the semi-final.

Both sides started positively with Buckland’s Abi Bond confidently commanding her area in the early seconds and her opposite number, Michaela Phillips, doing likewise, scurrying out to whip the ball away from an onrushing Laura Gough. At the other end, Katie Hine intercepted well after Argyle probed up the left-hand side – and this was all within the first two minutes! More early drama was to come as Bucks won a free-kick for a foul on Kirsty Caunter and the ball ended up hitting the Argyle crossbar. Then it was straight up the other end again, Natasha Knapman’s drive saved well by Bond who then reacted to catch Ezme Wells’ follow-up. Three minutes later, Gough created Buckland’s first real chance, sending in a low drive which Phillips did well to smother.

Argyle had another good chance to take the lead on 15 minutes, Knapman again testing Bond with a low shot but the home custodian was equal to it and also punched away Kayley Lane’s follow-up effort. Then it was Buckland’s turn to push for goal, Argyle defending stoutly and with great intelligence as they stood up to some tenacious attacking play, cut off the supply lines from the back and generally threw their bodies on the line. With the sun in her eyes for most of the first half, Phillips will have been relieved to see Helen Kukor’s looping effort, from a Carla Staddon free-kick, drop wide.

Hearts were in mouths on 28 minutes when a green body went down in the box but the referee’s whistle signified a free-kick to the home side. Soon after, Gough broke down the right and crossed to Helen Kukor who, with the goal gaping, blasted the ball inches wide of the right-hand upright. Shortly after that chance, Plymouth were caught offside just as the visiting forward was preparing to test Bond again. Then, on 39 minutes, came the opener. After a period of pressure, Kayleigh Brown sent in a corner, Katie Middleton flicked it on with her head and Lane reacted quickest to stab home the loose ball and put Argyle ahead. However, there was no sign of despondency in the home side and, on 44 minutes, Buckland found a deserved equaliser, captain Maria Warman working her way into the box before laying the ball to Kukor who made no mistake.

helen kukor
FOCUSED: Helen Kukor scored Bucks’ equaliser late in the first half.

Argyle nearly got their noses in front within a minute of the restart which again started in a positive fashion from both sides. Wells sent in a dangerous cross which Knapman smashed into the crossbar before Buckland managed to clear, leaving the visiting fans aghast. At the other end, Kukor hit her effort narrowly wide and Gough was also wide with a curled effort before Phillips did well to beat away another Kukor shot as Buckland broke with intent. With Kukor off the field following a knock, Plymouth seemed to take the opportunity to pile on more pressure, Knapman finding herself in a good position but unable to bring Wells’ cross under control.

Then came the move that was to see Buckland take the lead for the first time in the game. An incisive passing move on the edge of the box put the home side through and Becky Atkins brought down Caunter. Deemed to be the last player, Atkins received her marching orders and Hayley Chamberlain was given the responsibility from 12 yards. The midfielder made no mistake, hitting her spot-kick confidently into the bottom left after 62 minutes.

Both sides then adjusted their attacking options with Gabi Alphous coming on for Plymouth and Abigail Meyer entering the field of play for the hosts. Then, on the 75th minute, Buckland booked their place in the final with two goals within an amazing minute for the home side. As Plymouth pushed for an equaliser, Bond collected the ball and began another attack which saw Gough surging through on the right-hand side. On reaching the edge of the box, and without breaking stride, Bucks’ top scorer hit a sublime flighted shot over Phillips and into the far corner. Barely had the game restarted when Bucks turned over possession again and the ball found Caunter who produced a carbon copy goal to send the home crowd wild. 4-1 up with 15 minutes remaining and a player advantage, the odds were stacked in Buckland’s favour now but the holders, who play their football two division’s higher, could not be underestimated. Knapman, who deserved a goal for her efforts, tested Bond a few more times before the end but when Argyle’s second did come it was the substitute, Alphous, who found the net with a low shot on 85 minutes. Gough and Meyer eased the pressure, the latter tenaciously fighting her way into the box before being thwarted by Phillips, while, at the other end, Argyle were awarded a free-kick right on the edge of the box, right on the 90th minute, the wall doing its job. Plymouth were still desperately trying to claw another one back, hoisting another free-kick into the box three minutes into stoppage time, when the referee finally called time and the home celebrations could begin in earnest.

maria warman
ELATION: Captain Maria Warman celebrates Buckland’s shock cup victory.

“I’m over the moon for them,” said manager Grant Fisher after the game. “They have great ability, they believe in themselves and I said to them before the game I wouldn’t swap any of them for Plymouth.

“To beat a side two leagues above you 4-2 is an absolute testament to what they do and how hard they work – and after going one-nil down as well it was an outstanding reaction.

“People forget we knocked out Exeter in the last round, so we’ve knocked out the two highest-ranked teams in the competition.

“Long may it continue, this great journey we’re on.”

As far as this year’s journey in the Senior Cup goes, there is only one more step to take – an April 7th final against Marine Academy Plymouth Ladies who enjoyed a 6-1 victory over Plympton Ladies in yesterday’s other semi-final.

Dominant Buckland Ladies End Year in Style

Buckland Athletic Ladies signed off a successful 2016 in style with a dominant display against a Plympton Ladies side who were never at the races.

Main picture: Captain Maria Warman leads Buckland to another fine win as they end 2016 on a high. (c) MiraclePR.com

After a positive start for the league leaders, which saw them carve out two or three early chances to go ahead, captain Maria Warman unlocked the Plympton defence with a diagonal ball into the path of Hayley Chamberlain. The latter charged forward down the left before crossing for Helen Kukor to head home the first goal on eight minutes. Kukor completed her first-half hat-trick and Emily Hannaford also found the net as Buckland raced into a 4-1 lead at the interval, substitute Lucy Rothero with the visitors’ goal.
Buckland sat back a bit in the opening few minutes of the second half but the management duo of Grant Fisher and Vanessa Casey refused to allow them to sit on their lead and once the midfield was running at Plympton again there was only one way this match was going to end. In fact, Plympton were restricted to just three shots on goal in the second half, two on target. Midfielder Courtney Butt was a handful for Plympton all afternoon as Buckland looked to get the ball down the right-hand channel to Laura Gough as often as possible. Three minutes into the second half, just such a move led to a Gough cross being headed to the feet of Maria Warman who clipped the crossbar with her shot. After another Yellows move down the right had ended up with a shot hit narrowly wide, Plympton suddenly picked up the pace and forced Abbi Bond into her first save of the half, ten minutes in. The next significant action saw the hosts awarded a penalty for a trip and up stepped Chamberlain to convert it. Unfortunately for her, the powerful shot cannoned down off the crossbar and, after a moment of panic in the visitors’ box, the eventual follow-up was hit well over. In the 73rd minute, Buckland struck the woodwork again, this time the post, but they didn’t have long to wait for number five which came five minutes later. Abigail Meyer hadn’t been on the pitch very long when an attack from the left ended up with Meyer hitting a low shot across the goalkeeper and into the bottom right. Buckland still wanted more and the sixth goal came in the last minute of normal time, Maria Warman on the left-hand side of the area hitting a venomous shot on the half-volley, giving the goalkeeper no chance. There was nearly time for Plympton to grab a second consolation four minutes into stoppage time as they were awarded a direct free-kick in a dangerous position. But the wall did its job and Bond was equal to the follow-up shot.
