Early Hannaford Strike Earns Bucks a Point

Despite the recent poor run of form there was an air of optimism around the Buckland Women as they once again took to the road but this time with two new additions to the side: namely, returning central defender Jodie Chubb and a new acquisition in young forward Carmen Morison.

Following a week off, which allowed for some extra training along with an analysis session, Buckland Women took to the M5 as they travelled to Brislington Ladies F.C., a game that would see Manager Vanessa Casey and Head Coach George Hamill shuffle the pack due to the absentee of Leah Brooks, and the new arrivals. This saw Jodie’s inclusion reuniting last season’s centre-back partnership with Alex Sheppard, Jana Richards moving to the left hand side to allow Sarah Smith to be deployed in a more forward left winger role.  On the right, Alex Hugh retained her starting position behind Emily Hannaford who was favoured on the right wing, with Gabi Trays, Maria Warman and Captain Courtney Butt completing the midfield. They were all tasked with supplying the ever present Sarah Stacey up front.  The team was completed by last week’s Player of the Match Abigail Bond who would be hopeful to continue her good form of recent weeks.

This change of personnel seemed to have worked as early pressure on the Brislington goal yielded a few chances before, on the eighth minute, the ball fell to Hannaford who powerfully struck the ball home from the right hand side of goal. The pressure continued with good penetrating football down both wings. However, on the ninth minute, the home side had a chance to equalise after Bucks conceded a penalty when the referee deemed an aerial challenge unfair. However, it wasn’t to be as in-form Bond wouldn’t be beaten and made an excellent save low down to her right hand side. More chances fell to the away side as their pressure continued and, on the twenty-second minute, Smith hit the crossbar angle from a wide position. Again, in the thirty-fifth minute, Smith narrowly missed out stretching the lead by hitting the inside of the ‘keeper’s left hand post and, only minutes later, Stacey narrowly missed the target from a free-kick just outside the 18 yard box.  If truth be known, Buckland should have been out of sight by half time but would have to settle for a 1-0 lead going into the break.

In the second half, the onlooking crowd were surely expecting more of the same and after some stern words at half time about being clinical in front of goal, Buckland were surprised by the Brislington resolve which saw a swing in the pendulum of momentum towards the home side. This pressure, and the building frustration with the Buckland camp, saw, on the fifty-first minute, Alex Sheppard demonstrating the new Sin Bin rule for the first time this season, which enabled the home side to take advantage, in the fifty-second minute, by converting the resulting free-kick, making it one apiece.  Shortly after, on the fifty-sixth minute, Gabi Trays made way for Abigail Meyer following an injury sustained early on in the contest which has now been confirmed as a broken toe which may see the midfielder miss out in the coming weeks.  Further substitutions, on the sixty-fifth and seventy-seventh minutes, saw Alex Hugh make way for Natalie Warman and Emily Hannaford make way for new signing Carmen Morison respectively.  Despite prolonged pressure in the second half, Brislington were unable to break through. However, they looked the more likely to convert until the Buckland Women came back into the game with ten to go and again narrowly missed a couple of good chances.  With no further incidents to report, the game ended with the spoils being shared.

A much improved performance on previous weeks and with tougher tests to come, the gelling and refocus continues along with a much-needed composure in the final third.

Next up for the Buckland Women is a home tie against Swindon Town this ‪coming Saturday‬.

Argyle Class Shows Through in National League Plate Tie

Going in as underdogs, we started strong with a well-worked goal headed home by Sarah Stacey in the 8th minute, only for Argyle to reply with a tap in three minutes later. It was pretty much all Argyle for the next 20 minutes passing the ball really well in the middle of the park. Some fabulous goalkeeping throughout the first half wasn’t enough to stop Argyle being quicker to the loose balls, allowing them to score three more before the break.

The second half started as the first finished with Argyle scoring their best goal of the game just after the restart. With Bucks chasing the game, it left gaps for the very talented Argyle side to score two more before the full-time whistle. Overall Argyle’s quality showed and they were simply the better team.

Determined Visitors Take Three Points from Buckland

Not a great day at the office for the ladies as they returned to Homers Heath. We started the game the stronger of the two sides, passing the ball around well but never really threatening in the final third.

Neither side created much in the first half. Although it was end to end, there was no final product for either side.

The second half started much the same as the first with Buckland on top but a lapse in concentration and poor clearance across the box left it wide open for Cheltenham to put the ball in the net on the 48th minute. We came close from a couple of corners but couldn’t convert them. Abi Meyer made way for Emily Hannaford on 58 to get some fresh legs on the wings which saw a slightly brighter spell for the home team but to no avail. Nat Warman came off on the 72nd minute, replaced by Megan Strong, and we changed formation, Alex Hugh pushed up to help Sarah Stacey up top. Bucks could have pulled it back to a draw in the 90th minute after some good Buckland pressure but Sarah Stacey couldn’t slot the cross home.

We just weren’t at the races today and we simply didn’t want it as much as the visitors; we need to step it up if we want to get any results from our next two very tough games.

Fantastic Bucks Push Keynsham All The Way in League Cup

Abigail Meyer in action against Poole Ladies last season. (c)MiraclePR

Despite losing 2-1 to Keynsham who play in the league above, Buckland played some fantastic football.

The visitors started the stronger of the teams, Abigail Meyer (pictured) finding a great pass across the box on the 13th minute for Sarah’s Stacey to hit first time giving the goalkeeper no chance. Courtney Butt and Maria Warman dominated the middle of the park and pushed play down the channels utilising the pace of Natalie Warman and Meyer who had the run on the full-backs. With the blistering heat, both sets of players tired towards the end of the first half but Keynsham’s Number 15 came on the blind side of Buckland’s defence, slotting past Abigail Bond after 40 minutes to make the game level at half time.

Buckland started the second half strong with some great play from Emily Hannaford who dropped into the starting line-up in place of the unavailable Leah Brooks. She switched the ball to Natalie Warman who put in a great ball to Stacey whose shot hit the inside of the post and found its way to safety. The visitors continued to dominate and looked the better side, our two centre-halves Alex Sheppard and Jana Richards frustrating Keynsham’s formidable number 10, not allowing her any time or space. Keynsham almost took the lead on the 68th minute with a long range shot hitting the post but Bond managed to catch the rebound. A surging run from left back Sarah Smith, on 70 minutes, saw another good save from the Keynsham ‘keeper. With the game looking to go to extra time, Hannaford made way for Megan Strong in the 75th minute, to give Bucks some fresh legs, and the attacking surge continued from both teams! Another good performance from right-back Alex Hugh was dampened slightly with a yellow card in the 88th minute for a slight push on Keynsham’s winger. The game was finely poised with both teams pushing hard to avoid another 30 minutes but, in the 90th minute, Keynsham’s midfielder fired home a long range shot to seal the win.

Overall, I couldn’t be prouder of the 12 girls that travelled and gave their all.

Stacey Hat-Trick Helps Buckland WFC to Opening Day Victory

The ladies have in previous seasons started nervously but it wasn’t the case for the first game of this season.

The girls settled in well, getting used to passing the ball around, and the first goal game after some good pressure by Natalie Warman on the Maidenhead ‘keeper leaving Sarah Stacey with a tap in on 14 minutes. Buckland continued to control the game with Maria Warman breaking up any Maidenhead possession. The second goal came on 40 minutes with a fantastic cross from new signing Alex Hugh finding Sarah Stacey.

The second half started just as the first had finished with Buckland in full control, Natalie Warman slotting home in the 46th minute after some lovely play in the middle of the park by captain Courtney Butt and Leah Brooks.

Stacey then completed her hat-trick three minutes later.

Maidenhead then lost their ‘keeper on the 56th minute with a straight red after handling outside the area to block Abi Meyer’s strike.

The home team started to look a little more dangerous when they went down to ten; Abigail Bond in the Buckland Goal didn’t have much to do but kept her concentration when needed, her defensive line marshalled well by Alex Sheppard and Jana Richards.

With a slight knee strain, Natalie Warman made way for new signing Megan Strong who came on at left back to leave Sarah Smith to push up the pitch on the left wing.

The final change came on the 75th minute when new duel signing Sian Miller came on up top to replace Sarah Stacey.

Despite some tired legs the ladies saw the game out well.

Buckland now prepare for a stern test at National League South side Keynsham in next Sunday’s FA Women’s National League Cup.

Poole Party! Stacey Hits Hat-Trick in 5-1 Victory

Sarah Louise Stacey helped sink Poole with a hat-trick (c) MiraclePR

Buckland Athletic picked up another valuable three points in a comfortable 5-1 victory over Poole Town on a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Top scorer Sarah Louise Stacey wasted little time in getting things going with an opening goal within the first ten minutes. Buckland continued to attack in a dominant first half with Stacey making it 2-0 on 27 minutes.

Poole were facing threats from all over the pitch and Abigail Meyer almost made it three when her fizzing shot from the right was tipped over the bar. But it was Laura Gough who found the net next after recent signing Jana Richards beat her marker on the left before squaring for Gough to place past the goalkeeper with four minutes of the first half remaining.

Stacey almost completed her hat-trick just before the break but headed just past the post from a Buckland free-kick.

The second half started with Buckland again on the front foot, Gough wide with an effort and Stacey just beaten to the ball by the goalkeeper as she went up for a header. But it was the visitors who scored next. Poole had already seen Abigail Bond smother an effort following a corner and took full advantage of this rare spell of pressure as Sacha Paynter pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute.

Buckland soon got back in charge of the game though, Kirsty Caunter firing wide and only the outstretched leg of the ‘keeper preventing Richards from passing the ball into the open net shortly afterwards.

Stacey fired over the bar, Caunter hit another effort wide and Gough forced the goalkeeper into another save before Buckland finally got their fourth goal. Substitute Emily Hannaford showed strength and determination to take the ball past the goalkeeper on the right-hand side before finishing well with around 15 minutes to go.

Time looked to have run out for Stacey to complete her hat-trick but she finally got the elusive third goal, deftly lifting the ball over the advancing ‘keeper with two minutes on the clock to ensure a final score of 5-1 to the home side.

Buckland’s next game is Sunday’s tough away trip to Brislington. So far this season, Buckland have beaten Brislington twice, once in the league and once in the FA Women’s National League Cup so the Bristol side will be looking to make amends this time out. A win could see the Yellows rise up to as high as third in the table.

Buckland Extend Winning Run with 5-0 Victory at Poole

by Grant Fisher, First Team manager and Director of Ladies and Girls Football

Picture of Laura Gough (c) MiraclePR

We knew going into this game that we could extend our unbeaten run to three and keep the momentum going in the second half of the season. On the back of a great result last weekend against the league leaders, it was crucial we didn’t slip up today.

It was really important we didn’t let the win from Southampton get to our heads but also important that we embraced and let ourselves take a huge confidence from this result so the message was really clear: go and deliver another three points today and push us into fourth in the table and the ladies duly delivered.

Kicking against a strong wind first half, we did incredibly well to deal with it and found ourselves 1-0 ahead when Sarah Stacey added her 21st of the season after just five minutes.

Laura Gough (pictured) then got in on the act and added the second around ten minutes later after Jana Richards broke through and slotted the ball for her to stroke it into an open net. Stacey then completed her 22nd goal of the campaign, and our third goal of the game, as we went into the half time break 3-0 ahead with Poole very rarely threatening and anything they did swept up by Abi Bond, Jodie Chubb and Alex Sheppard and dealt with accordingly.

In the second half we had to contend with having the wind behind us which brings its own problems. It isn’t always as easy as people think and we were pretty wasteful in both halves at times. It took two headed goals to add to the tally with Shepherd first getting her second goal for the club.

Then Gough adding her second goal of the game and her 13th of the season with a fine looping header over the goalkeeper.

Overall we know we still have improvements to make and we know that we aren’t the finished article but what we do know is we can more than hold our own at this level.

These ladies have had an incredible season so far against the odds on many occasions and now we have a week off from the league to go and enjoy a cup semi final at St James Park, Exeter City F.C. on Sunday. The winners will face Plymouth Argyle in the final on April 12th. Exeter will be a tough side to beat on the day and we know we have to be at our best. It’s a day we haven’t spoken about a lot and now it’s time to focus on getting another job done and another game won.

Buckland Enjoy More Away Day Success with Victory at Southampton

Picture (c) Dave Roach

With another long away day, departing the same time as they had the week before, this was always going to be another tough challenge for Buckland as they travelled to a Southampton Saints side who had had an up and down start to the season.

We wanted to carry on from where we left off last week and get another three points on the board away from home and the ladies duly delivered on what again can only be described as a really nice surface to play football on.

After a slow start to the game, with Southampton having a few half chances, we really started to open up and with 20 minutes left of the first half it was one way traffic. Sarah Stacey was denied a goal for offside, which was dubious to say the least, and a few times we just fluffed our lines In front of goal or it didn’t quite happen for us in the final third.

Southampton couldn’t wait for the half time whistle as it really was a matter of minutes before we were going to break through. However, both teams managed to get to the half time break unscathed.

HT: Southampton Saints 0 – 0 Buckland Athletic

We re-grouped, had a chat about a few things, and went out and executed the plan superbly, playing on the front foot and putting pressure high up the pitch. After a few minutes of pressure, we finally got the breakthrough when the second phase of the corner got put back into the box by Laura Gough with Stacey on hand to nod home into an empty net 0-1.

Then, within a minute, we regained possession. Gough picked up the ball from 35 yards and half volleyed sublimely over the goalkeeper into the back of the net to really stamp our mark on the game at 0-2.

From there onwards, we really set the tone and dictated the game and the tempo, the Southampton goalkeeper making three or four fine stops to keep the score at 2-0. We completed another long away day by taking another three points back to Devon.

FT: Southampton Saints 0 – 2 Buckland Athletic

To summarise, this was a really tough game. Southampton made it hard to start with and played some very nice football. However, once we got to grips with the situation we were fine. My two centre halves were outstanding, along with my goalkeeper, and they dealt with all the threats. It was a super three points to get and keeps us at the right end of the table going into the Christmas period.

We now have a huge game at home on Sunday in the SSE Women’s FA Cup First Round proper looking to make history and get into the Second round for the first time. We host high flyers Cheltenham Town on Sunday – 1pm at Homers Heath. We will also be showing our support for the men and women who serve our country and having a bucket collection for #AmbersArmy so let’s see Teignbridge and Newton Abbot come and roar these ladies on and make it a super day!

Buckland Battle it out to First National League Victory

It may not have been one for the football purists but Buckland Athletic showed grit and determination to come through Sunday’s battling encounter with Brislington with all three points.

Neither side created much in the way of chances in the first half but the visitors took one of theirs, Paige Sawyer turning and hitting a fierce shot from the right across Abbi Bond’s goal and into the left corner. Buckland’s best chance came from a Taylor Beales cross which was hit wide by Laura Gough.

The game opened up a little more in the second half but was still dominated by aerial balls and strong tackles. Abbi Bond was forced into a couple of good saves but it was Buckland who scored the next goal, Alex Sheppard arriving at the back post three minutes into the second half to get the final touch on a cross. Sarah Louise Stacey had joined Gough up front after the break and it looked as if the pairing might pay off. However, an incident flared up between Gough and Brislington’s Chelsea Heal which left the referee with little option but to send both to the dressing room. With ten minutes remaining, captain Courtney Butt clinched the game, controlling the ball 25 yards from goal before returning it, with interest, into the top of the Brislington net.

Buckland Ladies Gain Point At Cheltenham

Photography by Dave Roach

Report by Matt Green – Sport South Devon

Buckland Athletic Ladies travelled to Cheltenham Town Ladies in the FA Women’s National League South West on Sunday Afternoon for their second league game of the season and came away with their first point after a 2-2 draw.

Having suffered a heavy defeat in their first outing a few weeks earlier, the ladies bounced back with a good cup win last Sunday so manager Grant Fisher’s team went into the fixture in high spirits against a side with two wins from two before kick-off.

Fisher had to make three enforced changes to his starting line-up for the game and the visitors started slowly having to get used to the surface which was very difficult in areas and also battle against the wind in the first half.

Buckland led to their own downfall after 15 minutes and found themselves a goal behind. “We gave away a sloppy goal after we rushed playing out from the back and got caught out by a lively Cheltenham striker who squared the ball to be finished into an empty net,” Fisher told Sport South Devon.

After weathering a 25 minute storm from Cheltenham, Buckland grew into the game and started to dominate and create a few chances. Having seen a couple of opportunities go begging, the yellows capitalised on their first corner when Courtney Butt got across the front post and placed a super header back across the goal and into the roof of the net, after a super delivery from Leah Brooks.

Having got back on level terms, Fisher’s ladies started to dominate the game and played at a high tempo. Just before half time, the visitors got a deserved second goal when Natalie Warman finished off a great 20-yard strike into the bottom corner of the net.

Athletic started the second half as they had finished the first and saw a number of chances go begging which could have killed off the game. However, on 70 minutes another mistake led to the hosts having an empty net to finish into and level the scores up.

The equaliser gave Cheltenham further impetus and Buckland defended well for the last 20 minutes. “Their equaliser gave them a second wind and by the time it finished we were thankful to get a draw,” admitted Fisher.

Following the result, Fisher told Sport South Devon: “This game could have been very different as we dominated for the majority of the game. However, we cannot be disappointed with a draw away from home against a good Cheltenham side.”

Buckland now move on to two home games when they welcome Brislington to Homer’s Heath and then there’s the visit of Ilminster in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round.

“We would love to receive all your support and keep pushing these ladies in the FA Women’s National League. We are very appreciative of all your support.” Fisher added.

MORE BUCKLAND LFC NEWS

On the same day, Buckland Athletic LFC Development side started their 2018/19 Devon Women’s Premier League campaign with a victory over Activate LFC. Activate were relegated from the South West Women’s Football League South West Division One last season while Buckland were runners up in the DWPL.

The Under-12 Girl’s side also started their new season and came away from Cullompton Rangers with an incredible 18-0 win!
