Buckland knew they were in for a tough game after having played Stoke Hill Junior in their previous game, especially because they were playing away, in wet and muddy conditions this time out.
Unlike in the previous game, Buckland were unable to get an early advantage and were found wanting in the final third despite spending most of the first half on the attack. They did almost get their noses in front when Codi Dicken hit the post but the hosts held out and the sides went in 0-0 at half-time.
The game continued much in the same vein in the second half but Stoke were posing more of a threat and almost took the lead when they hit the post in a nervy period. The game had a 1-0 look about it (either way) until the last ten minutes when Buckland suddenly went up a gear. Codi had been moved into midfield and that proved to be a wise move as the Yellows began to retain the ball more in the opposition half. But it was a dynamic run down the right from Ava Mitchell that led to the first goal, her fine ball into the box collected by debutant Matilda Kemmett who kept a cool head before slotting past the goalkeeper.
With their tails up, Buckland began to show the clinical edge that had desertes them all game. Moments after Matilda’s opener, Robyn Mitchell charged down the left and hit her trademark rocket past the home goalkeeper.
With a couple of minutes remaining, Ava again scurried down the right, cut inside and forced the ball inside the near post via the goalkeeper.
It was certainly not the best Buckland performance of the season but the finish was definitely worth waiting for!
