Sunday saw Buckland Girls back in action after sealing the league title two weeks ago. This time they were in League Cup action against Newton Fire away at Forches Cross. This was going to be a good local derby between the Newton Abbot teams.

Buckland started off strong, playing the ball around and stretching the opposition. This led to a strike on goal by Taylor Ford who put the ball cleanly into the back of the net. Newton Fire came back with their own attack after the restart but Buckland’s defence held strong. Buckland Girls played the ball around nicely, pushing the Newton Fire defence and shooting high and wide several times. Then, with a great strike, Cicely Downs made it 2-0 to Buckland. Another five minutes passed with Buckland having the greater of the possession and missing several more chances. Then they broke again with Anya Nicette making a great run across the box and distracting the keeper as Downs hit the target for her second goal. Buckland carried on to dominate the first half with a further two goals, going in at half time 5-0 up.

The second half started with a Buckland kick-off which led to an early sixth goal and a hat trick for Taylor Ford. Newton Fire restarted the game and a quick interception by Sylvia Tippet led to her scoring Buckland’s seventh goal. Newton restarted again and had some good play with Buckland stretched on a couple of occasions. They came close to scoring as they shot very close to keeper Ellie Mitchell’s post. Buckland then carried on playing the ball around with several more chances before Ocean Latto scored the eighth goal for the visiting Buckland team.

With the final whistle sounding, Buckland now progress on to the semi-final of the League Cup against Dawlish on Sunday 5th March at Homers Heath.
