Buckland Off To Winning Start Against Wellington

Ellis Laight gave starts to Nick Barker, Karl Green and Charlie Johansen with Clifford Walters dropped and Simon Revell and Chris Wright relegated to the bench as Buckland sought to put their cup exit behind them and start their league campaign with a win.

Jared Lewington had an early chance to give the Yellows the ideal start but he headed over. Richard Groves ended up being the first league goalscorer of the season for the home side as he slotted home a penalty after a Wellington handball.

Groves also scored Bucks’ second, his shot deflected past Sidley-Adams by Jack Bryant. The visitors then started growing into the game and pulled one back, Karl Green beaten to the tackle and Wellington breaking away and scoring through Jack Taylor. Adam Seedhouse-Evans then made a double save before half-time to ensure Bucks went in a goal ahead.

After the break, both sides created good chances, Connor Sidley-Adams doing well to beat away the best of them and keep Wellington within touching distance. Cameron Kelly did eventually get a third to give Bucks some breathing space, heading home a corner from just inside the box. Wellington reduced the deficit with a spot kick of their own, Ian Bellinger doing the necessary, but couldn’t quite do enough to deny Buckland three points to start their season.

Buckland Can’t Shake FA Cup Hoodoo in Bodmin Loss

Poor starts and ‘almost’ recoveries are becoming standard fare for Buckland Athletic in the FA Cup as the Yellows exited the FA Cup 3-2 at home to Bodmin Town in their season opener.

Bodmin took the lead through Adam Carter who scored from a corner after 28 minutes. The Cornish side doubled up three minutes from the end of the half via a free-kick, Harry Evans with the goal. Carter’s second, after the break, looked to settle the result but Buckland’s fightback began when Lloyd Gardner opened his account for the season just after the hour mark. Cameron Kelly’s dismissal made the task ahead more difficult but when Charlie Johansen found the target the hope was restored. Adam Kelly’s dismissal in the final minutes equalised the player count but Buckland couldn’t quite do the same for the score and bowed out, Bodmin going on to meet Hengrove in the next round.

Buckland Athletic: Seedhouse-Evans, Walters, Drew, Rudge, Kelly, Head (c), S. Revell, Groves, Wright, Lewington, Gardner. Subs: Johansen, Clenahan, Down, McCann

Bodmin Town: Painter, Timmons, Jewell, Ash (c), Symonds, McPhee, Colwell, Rogers, Carter, Kelly, Evans. Subs: Clifford, S. Gilbert, Nixon, M. Gilbert, D. Gilbert
