Celebrating International Women’s Day – March 8th

Today we celebrate the achievements of women globally as we mark International Women’s Day. BUT, in doing so, recognising that there is still so much more still to be done before women in every country in the world are treated as gender equal, free of bias or stereotyping, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive, and, where difference is valued and celebrated.

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been around for over a hundred years, and many issues still impact women’s advancement. Since 1911, IWD belongs to all who care about women’s equality. It serves to celebrate women’s achievements, to raise awareness about discrimination, and to take action to forge gender parity.

The theme for 2025 is #AccelerateAction.

At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum.

Even in our own community, amongst all walks of life, and especially through our sporting access, it is still easy to see women being marginalised and not treated as equal to men. In fact elevating women and girl’s participation and achievement in sport, is one of the key strands of the Accelerate Action theme.

Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasizes the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.
