Torquay United complete their protracted season in Dorset on Sunday, with the most important game of the campaign.  A win for United at Sherborne Town Ladies secures the South West Regional Women\u2019s Premier League.  Anything less consigns the Gulls girls to another season of regional football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The match has been switched to Ilchester Sports Field, another grass surface for United, after an impeccable display on the Plainmoor turf against Pucklechurch Sports last weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday’s match pits third place versus second, though Sherborne Town Ladies can no longer steal runner-up spot and are destined to finish in third place behind Torquay, and Maine Academy Plymouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, Sherborne won\u2019t be rolled over easily.  They\u2019ve only lost twice in their 19 league games, a 3-0 defeat at Forest Green Rovers Women at the start of April, and bizarrely 7-4 at home to Frampton Rangers Ladies.  However, that defeat had a sting in the tail for Torquay, as Sherborne bounced back the following weekend to beat United 3-0 at Ivybridge College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was a day that nothing went right, and in hindsight, it might have been better left on a grass pitch and postponed due to the weather.  United\u2019s ladies hadn\u2019t played for a month because of the winter storms and needed a game.  But their lack of match fitness showed; they got their game plan wrong, were unable to exploit their wide pace due to the narrowness of the Ivybridge pitch, and conceded the second goal, albeit correctly, over an officiating error!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sherborne, as a result, duly punished United that day, and could do so again if the visitors aren\u2019t fully prepared.  Since their defeat at Forest Green, the Dorset side have had comfortable wins over AFC St Austell and Ilminster, a narrower victory over Pucklechurch Sports, and beaten Poole Town to win their County Cup.  They boast the league\u2019s top scorer, Chloe Snook, who\u2019s notched 23 this campaign, and in the absence of the unrelated Kelly Snook, Imogen Miller has been finding the net with regularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But United are eleven unbeaten, that draw at M.A.P the only dropped points since the 1-0 home defeat to the Plymouth side back in January.  Six clean sheets in a row confirm that Torquay have been outstanding in their defensive duties.  Not to mention they can score goals too.  Lucy Solloway is just four behind the scoring leader, and Anthea Kaptein and Ellie Bishop are well into double figures too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does make for an intriguing encounter, although perhaps not the one Torquay would have wanted as the game to decide their season.  So long as they arrive at Woodwater Lane with the can-do attitude that has been steadily growing all spring, then they have more than enough ability, flexibility, and versatility to bring the title to south Devon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
