Ronald Cup Winners 2017: Torbay Police (c) Derek Castree
Riviera United: (J. Parker)
Torbay Police: (T. Dare; M. Love)
Goals from Matt Love and Tom Dare delivered the WBW (Solicitors) SDFL Ronald Cup to Torbay Police after a close battle with a strong, well-organised Riviera United side at The Rec.
In a pre-match interview, Torbay Police manager Tim Perrin sent out a reminder that prolific forward duo Bobby Chancellor and Max Prestwood were not the only Bees players who had goals in them. His words turned out to be prophetic with both Torbay Police goals coming from unlikely sources. In a close-run, intriguing and strongly contested game, Matt Love put the Police in front 25 minutes into the first half from a Stuart Pointon cross, but their lead was wiped out just before half-time following a misplaced pass in midfield. This led to a good Rivi ball over the top,’keeper Chris Bashford just beaten to the ball by James Parker, who finished well.
HALF TIME: Riviera Utd 1-1 Torbay Police
If the Bees had shaded the first half they were second best after the break although chances were few and far between at either end. Ten minutes before time, Rivi could have gone in front but some last-ditch defending and a great save from Bashford kept Torbay Police’s hopes of lifting the Division Three divisional cup alive. With five minutes to go, a corner was cleared by Rivi from underneath their crossbar only as far as Zac Chancellor on the edge of the box. His drive was heading wide of the left-hand upright but Tom Dare was in the right place to divert it past the United goalkeeper and edge the Police in front; it was Dare’s second goal of the season – scored in consecutive games! The Bees hung on to lift their first trophy since the 2013 Ivor Andrews Cup and spoil Riviera United’s first ever cup final.
