It may not have been the result they had hoped for but it was nonetheless a momentous day for the newly merged Galmpton United and Roselands – now Galmpton & Roselands as they kicked off the South West Peninsula League Division One East at Tiger Way, Axminster on Friday 11th August.

Hosts Axminster Town broke the deadlock after 34 minutes with Gary Spiller finishing well. Spiller, along with debutant Dan Colllins, had already wasted early chances for the Tigers and another new face, teen defender Charlie Skilton struck the bar with a cross-cum-shot. Nathan Warran almost found the net with a couple of long shots but it was the foul on Sam Dibling – and the penalty he himself scored – which finally sealed the win with ten minutes left on the clock. Minutes later, Sam Chorley pulled one back for the visitors but any hopes of snatching an opening day point faded when Phil Corvisieri was dismissed for a foul on full-back Craig Every.
